WOMAN OF THE MONTH: Julie Ponder's Photographic Gallery brings you spectacular images of an Australia that most people never see. "I have been an enthusiastic photographer since childhood, starting with a Box Brownie at 8 years old and progressing through numerous film cameras to the wonders of digital image-making. Studying Art in my 20s, I spent 10 years employed as a painter/illustrator at The Australian Museum." "It was always more important to me to work with artistic changes of shape, color and emotional expression in my photos than to produce a technically perfect reproduction of reality. In my “old fashioned” darkroom, these effects involved filters, torches and cardboard cutouts. The process took a lot of time and exposure to hazardous chemicals, so I was delighted to graduate to a "digital darkroom" in 2005 and use the fantastic tools in image manipulation programs to optimize the tone, luminance and contrast of my pictures." Many of Julie’s photographs are taken on expeditions to unusual places in the Australian outback. Frequently on private property, access requires permission from station owners and skill at navigating off-road. These adventures give Julie the opportunity to photograph scenery seen by very few people and develop her own way of expressing what she sees. WINNERS
